Oxford’s Michael Smith representing the Midlands Minigolf Club overcame a double-challenge to win the 3rd Splash Point Open in Worthing on the South Coast of England. With title still up for grabs as the top-3 came to the 18th in the final round, Smith fought back to cancel out the lead of Sompting’s Steve Lovell (Sussex Wasps Mini Golf Club) and contain the challenge of Portugal’s Nuno Cunha (VIZELGOLF) to take the tournament to an extra hole play-off. One extra hole was all that was needed for Smith to further cement his domination of UK domestic Minigolf. The top three were only separated by one shot with Smith and Cunha both carding 13 under par 3 round scores of 95 with Lovell one shot further back.
Held under humid evening skies, the rain that disrupted earlier practice was long forgotten as the 29 players within the field started the first round with 6 different Minigolf clubs being represented.
Lovell set the early pace through rounds 1 and 2 but Smith and Cunha were tucked in tight with Croydon’s William Donnolley just behind the trio after carding a 36 in the second round. Donnolley’s eventual 4th place finish would also be good enough to walk away with the spot-prize for most Ace’s.
The current home of the BMGA Masters tournament each April, the Splash Point Open also played host to a number of players competing in their first tournament to round off a successful day of minigolf’ing on the south coast.
