First Event in the Gothenburg Mini MOS Tour

On the 17th of April the first event in Gothenburg mini MOS tour took place. The weather in Gothenburg this week was quite cold and if you wanted to train early Friday morning it was just about zero degrees Celsius (32F). Saturday and Sunday morning was about 5-6 degrees. Despite of these conditions there were 22 players showing up at the competition which were held in 7-9 degrees temperature. Three players from the reigning champions team of WAGM were there plus the well playing coach Pauli Kuikka. Also a couple of Gullbergsbro's best players were there.

The course had newly been refurnished and cleaned with high pressure water and sand put on the artificial grass. This made some of the lanes slower than the last years but it also made the greens easier to putt so the main conditions were very good. Some concrete plates had also been placed out and fixed on lane 2, 3 and 16 which made at least lane 2 and 16 easier to get an ace on.

Already in the first round there were good results with Gunnar Bengtsson taking the lead with 36 strokes and Anders Lönnqvist and Jens Bergström sharing the lead in the Senior male class by 37 each.

The second round seemed to be a bit harder and perhaps some players had underestimated the temperature as we could hear some complaints about cold fingers. Despite frigid fingers, Pauli Kuikka managed to make a 37 round but in the overall class Gunnar and Jens was still in the lead with a 77 each.

The temperature was still low in the third round and actually it was only Anders Lönnqvist who scored under 40 with his 37-round. This did not change anything at the top though. Gunnar and Jens still lead the overall class together and their respective classes with a 117 each.

The clouds then made some holes for the sun to look in through and it was time for the fourth round. This was to be a round with much better results from many players. In the senior women class once again Ulla Forsman and Linda Lundberg was having an exciting game where Ulla had the lead with three strokes after three rounds and once again she managed to keep Linda after and won finally by two strokes.

The overall class was quite tight with Gunnar and Jens on 117, Pauli on 120 and Andreas on 121 and then all of them scored under 40. Jens coming in on 38 even though he got stuck on lane 13 with 4 strokes. 155 strokes made him the winner of the Senior Male class and also setting a new average score record on 38,75 but Gunnar was still on the course. Gunnar started his last round with aces on lanes 1,2 and 4 putting away every practical chance of winning for Pauli or Andreas. Gunnar did have some threes on the way but he also had more aces. In the end he scored 34 and thereby he did not only win the overall class but he did also score a new course record for one round and an average score record with 37,75.

The next phase of this competition will take place in Gullbergsbro in late September two weeks after the WAGM.

Thank you to Jens Bergström for providing this article.
