Austria and Germany take the team gold’s in Portel

The second and last day of team competition in the Youth European Championships in Portel, Portugal, ended in much drama.

After the first day Germany was in joint lead together with Sweden in the boy’s category. In third place a bit behind (41 strokes) was Switzerland closely followed by the Czech Republic. The second day was to become a battle for Gold and another battle for Bronze.

In the fight for Gold Sweden took a small early grip on the eternit, but the came two strong rounds from the Germans making the gap down to Sweden a huge 16 strokes before the last felt lap. But Sweden’s two first players (Derice and Marcus) started off in furious pace on the last felt lap with 26 and 29 . Since the two Germans made 71 the gap was almost closed after just two players. But still on the course where four players and the Germans buys was the stronger team lead by anchorman Thomas Sieber, who made the best double round with 28-21 when it was most needed. Gold to Germany 11 strokes in front of the Swedes.

The battle for bronze was even more thrilling and the Czech boys could turn the situation around on the last felt laps to win over Switzerland by 9 strokes. In Switzerland 4 boys was in the top 10 but even that was not enough for a medal since the 5th and 6th team member was number 47 and 56 in the field.

Best individually in the boy’s category:

1. Jan Anderegg, Switzerland, 214
2. Alexander Dahlstedt, Sweden 219
3. Lars Anderegg, Switzerland 221
4. Marcel Waleska, Germany 222
5. Juuso Tasku, Finland 224

Even more drama was shown in the girl’s category. Germany was in the lead after Wednesday, 3 strokes in front of Austria. On third spot was Czech Republic, 9 strokes behind leading Germany and fourth place Russia 9 strokes from bronze and one of the favourites Sweden was only fifth , 11 strokes from medal and 20 strokes from Gold. With the same team as last year’s World Champions, the Germans girls were big favourites to defend their title. But this time the German machinery didn’t really work as smooth as expected. Even though the Austrian girls didn’t really put up a brilliant performance they could quite easy take the gold by and consistent game without any major mistakes.

Actually the Germans had to fight to take the silver medal after playing quite shaky on the felt on the seventh round, where they was forced to make a substitution. The silver was in the end taken by Germany with a margin of 6 strokes before Sweden who overtook the Czech girls on the last round by two strokes.

Best individually in the girl’s category:

1. Annika Dellmann, Germany 233
2. Karolína Jandová, Czech Republic 235
3. Martina Danner, Austria 235
4. Yulia Korytina, Russia 243
5. Jennifer Helm, Austria 244

Tomorrow is the stroke play finals played, hopefully with better result service. It was very poor during Thursday, which was loudly noted on social networks.
