It's not often when the first of something leads to a record being set in a sport that's been played competitive for quite a while. However, the first Irish Minigolf open held on February 17-18 at Rainforest Adventure Golf in Dublin saw just that as Pauli Kuikka shot a 23 on the 2nd round to set an MOS World Record. Unfortunately that great round wasn't enough to keep him at the top of the leaderboard after 8 rounds. On his performance Pauli mentioned "I came off the course shaking, I was so happy to do that in a tournament."
Out of the field of 36 competitors (half from Ireland and half representing 4 other countries across Europe), Adam Kelly from Great Britain rose to the top shooting a 219 and finishing 4 strokes ahead of current BMGA Chairman, Sean Homer. Adam's steady play of 7 rounds under 30 (including 2 rounds of 25), and one right at the 30 mark, propelled him to the top spot, but it wasn't without drama. All 4 of Adam's winning strokes were earned in the last round (one of his two 25s) as Sean put the pressure on with a 29. Karl Lakos of Austria rounded out the podium finishing 11 strokes behind Adam. For this efforts, Adam walked away with a cool 1500 EUR.
Irish participants also competed in the Irish National Minigolf Championships. Jamie Campbell shot a 262 to claim that title and finish 14th overall in the Irish Open competition. Jamie's efforts earned him 350 EUR.
