As the school year winds down for many places across the world, we wanted to take another look at minigolf being used in educational settings. In Part 3 of this series we looked at miniature golf in gardens and applying scientific principles. In this article we look at 3D printed courses, a mash-up of education and art, and one that pulled a variety of learning subjects together.
First on our list is a story out of Queens, NY, USA and it features "mini-mini" golf at the Rego Park School. Nineteen teams of elementary and middle school children spent 3-4 months building out desktop miniature golf holes using 3D printers. The goal was to combine technology education with creative thinking, and expanded on that with some composition skills as the event had participants write about what hole they liked best for a chance to win a gift card. Who knows where such an event will lead for one of these children - maybe there is an aspiring minigolf course designer in their midst!
We move into the college years for the second article on our list as we travel to Providence, RI, USA and the Rhode Island School of Design minigolf course. Normally we'd include an article like this in our art series, and we're sure some of these designers will find themselves creating holes for other museums in the future, but this one came with an educational twist as it was done for a "spacial dynamics" course. The article notes that the class encourages students to "pursue and create space through time, not only through aesthetic values." It sounds a bit heavy but is just another example of how minigolf can be applied to anything! The 10 hole course was based on various artists and the most unique might have been where you putted the ball through paint to create your own splatter art. It's amazing to see the ideas that can be applied to hole design.
For the last article we slide on down the East Coast of the US to Florida and the Oxford Academy course. Instead of being limited to the focus of just one class, this school found a way to combine math, physics, art and wood-shop into the design of a 9 hole course. It gave the students in these various disciplines a chance to see how they all needed to work together to reach the end goal of the minigolf course. As Bart Simpson once said about minigolf “I can't believe it. You've actually found a practical use for geometry!”
With minigolf entering all sorts of educational venues and even being turned into University societies, is it really that long before we get a whole course devoted to the sport?
