After 3 previous days of 4 rounds each (2 on concrete and 2 on eternit), the final day of the Portuguese Individual Championships took place last Sunday at the easy Lamego courses.
Blessed by a late summer weather (sunny and temperatures around 25 degrees) 7 titles were in play, Men, Women, Seniors I and II, Boys and Male and Female Kids.
Manuela Pinheiro (CM Porto) confirmed her lead and finished first in Women, a place she already knew. In the Seniors I, Eduardo Salazar (CM Porto) renewed his title comfortably, in fact a place he “owns” since he started playing in this category. Joaquim Cunha (Vizelgolfe) beat last years’ champion in Seniors II, reaching the title for the first time.
Also in the youth categories there were first time champions, Sílvia Oliveira (Vizelgolfe) and André Machado (CM Porto) won in Kids and Luís Silva (CM Porto) was first in Boys. These last two are playing this season for the first time.
The Men title was the one with the most candidates in spite of the 6 points lead of Paulo Gomes (MCP). Behind him there were 5 players within 3 points difference. Paulo Gomes, as well as 3 of those 5 players, had a bad day and all he managed was a privileged spot to witness the fight between André Campos (CM Porto) and João Nabais (MCP).
Starting the last round on eternit with a 4 four point lead, André saw that margin went away as João aced the first 13 lanes. But lane 14 (a difficult and skill demanding plateau) proved too difficult for João Nabais (recently ranked 5th after the preliminary rounds at the Vergiate EC) and with a 3 opened the path for André Campos who raced away acing the last 5 lanes, finishing with a well deserved title after being able to keep in control against a much more experienced player.
