Umeå, Sweden - With larger miniature golf championships around the world being scarce this year, there are some events still taking place. On July 31 and August 1, Sweden saw their 2020 Youth Championships take place at Umeå Miniaturegolf and it was a very successful event. There were 31 players (18 girls, 13 boys), born between 2005 and 2013, from nine different Swedish associations who took part in the two-day competition.
The format of the competition was 3 rounds stroke play for youngest and open category and 5 rounds stroke plays for older categories on the miniaturegolf course the first day. On the second day there was match play, one cup for the youngest and open category and one cup for the older categories. The cup trees were designed so that all youth played at least two matches.
Carina Lindström, coordination manager of the competition has this to say about the event, “Every other minigolf events in Sweden was cancelled early due to the pandemic but this event was to be played so late in the season that the Swedish Minigolf Association kept it open for planning and at a late date approved [the competition].
The competition was only played on the miniaturegolf course because to have approval from the authorities for the event the area should be enclosed. Normally it should have been two courses, in this case miniaturegolf and felt, and it would have been a training camp arranged before the competition. This was not possible due to the restrictions.”
The precautions extended off the course as well as there were special enclosed areas for food, drink and ice cream, and all food was cooked at a nearby kitchen by hygiene schooled staff.
In the older male youth categories Leonard Nordlund stood out with some exception scores over the 5 stroke play rounds, finishing with an impressive 126. For the older female youth, Lina Lennestål was the stand-out performer with a 144. With the younger youth, Jill Spets and Elin Spets set a standard to beat being the only two in the younger categories to shoot below 90 for the 3 rounds. Matteus Lundin has the best 3 round score for the younger males at 107.
