Moments of destiny in Tampere

The cup finals of Minigolf European Championships 2008 offered entertainment for the whole minigolf family. Some 300 spectators (of whom 170 online, viewing the webcams) witnessed the sudden death play-off for gold between Nicole Piechotta of Germany and Sandra Wicki of Switzerland.

At the 3rd lane of sudden death play-off, Nicole Piechotta scored a hole-in-one, and Sandra Wicki missed... or so everyone thought. But destiny decided otherwise: the ball went into the hole from two unexpected wall hits. And five minutes later, Sandra Wicki stood as the winner of Minigolf European Championships 2008.

2nd Nicole Piechotta, 1st Sandra Wicki, 3rd Nicole Gundert-Greiffendorf

The match for bronze medal was won by Nicole Gundert-Greiffendorf of Germany, with clear numbers 6 – 2 against Sandra Weaver of Sweden. The four best ranked players after preliminary rounds, Alice Kobisch (D), Elisabeth Berger-Rella (A), Rebecca Weber (CH) and Sandra Bengtson (S), fell from the competition before the medal matches.

2nd Jesper Andersson (S), 1st Harald Erlbruch (D), 3rd Marco Templin (D)

Defending European champion in men, Harald Erlbruch of Germany, renewed his title, by winning the cup competition after a less than perfect beginning in the tournament — ranked 18th after the 8 preliminary rounds. Jesper Andersson of Sweden fell in the final match with points 6 – 3.

The match for bronze was tighter between Marco Templin of Germany and Gustav Björnberg of Sweden. Templin took the medal with points 5 – 4. Ranked 8th after the preliminary rounds, Marco Templin was the highest ranking player to take a medal in men’s cup competition. All top-ranking players fell from the competition before the medal matches.
