WMF follows EMF regarding double individual title

World 03 Feb 2011 at 15:52 | Published by:  | Views: 11033 | News search  | source: WMF

WMF follows EMF regarding double individual title During last meeting of WMF Technical Committee, which has been held in Stockholm (Sweden) past 28th/30th January, some very important decisions have been taken by the TC members.

The most important one is that also World Championships 2011 in Stockholm (Sweden) and Youth World Championships 2011 in Naturns (Italy) will assign two individual titles. The new formula will be:
- 2 days for team tournament
- 1 day for stroke play final (all players will play 2 rounds + 2 rounds for best 15 male and 9 ladies players)
- 1 day for match play "super final" (best 32 men and 16 ladies after 8th round in the 3rd day)

So WMF immediately follows EMF decision about the new championship playing modus.

Some other important decisions has been taken: expecially the fact that the first World Adventuregolf Masters will take place at 13./14.May 2011 in Hastings / UK.

well said Marco Nicolussi!! I totally agree with you! this is a really bad decision in my point of wiew and make the WC 2011 much less interesting to aim for.

for me is sounds like this is a way for WMF to say to the KO-haters "you get what you want" without saying " we were wrong about KO".
itīs another discussion if we should play strokeplay or KO, but please just chose one!

I think each player could react in a different way. If you are a player that gives his best under pressure, you'll probably have benefits from playing in the team. But if you give your best with lower pressure it would be better for you to play without a team (or with a team with no big chances).
@ philippe
of course the "preparation" matter counts. But when I think about different conditions I also talk about other things:
- "team" choices: we all know that often teams make some choiches in some lanes to play a less/more risky line or ball. That surely affects individual results, because in individual tournament each player could choose the line/risk he would feel better.
- playing conditions: just think about individual men playing on the opposite course than teams. If we have one rainy day, players who play on different course could have different conditions (maybe we have the miniaturegolf course covered with tent, the concrete course not...or the felt course where playing in wet conditions has lower importance...)
These are only two example of how the team event can affects (while it should not do that) the individual results.

At the moment, during the WM or the EC, there is a team competition. For a lot of countries, this team competition seems to be very important. For Germany, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland,..... 11 players + 4 coaches prepare this team competition during 15 days and a lot of money is used to obtain a good result.

For others countries who dont have money to send a complete team, it's really not easy to compete because 1) We dont have the same material/coach to prepare the balls 2) Less players = lower level but also less balls and less time to try the balls and no time to train the second shot, ....

So, I think the results of championships could be really different if all the players played with their own material and preparation. Of course, I'm sure that Alexander Geist or CJ Ryner are better than me, but sometimes I perform international tournament where there are no coaches, and the difference between me and the top european player is smaller than the difference during WM.

In predazzo, only players coming from germany, sweden, austria, switzerland and italia was in final. Some exceptions : Palinkas and fazekas (play for Wien), Tiekstra (play for Tantogardens), Salonen (play for tantogardens), jasper (play in bundesliga), .... Do you think these very good players are able to compete against the others top european players if they played in their championships and if they played with their balls, thier preparation and their coaches during WM. I'm not sure. My friends Remy Vallin missed the final for 1 or 2 shots. I'm sure he played the final if he played with the german/sweden preparation during the WM.

I accept the difference during the WM because it's the reality of our sport, more players in germany = more money and best material and I think it's the same thing in every sport.

So, the difference between big and small countries is not due to team competitions, but if you say "no coaches because no team competitions", the difference will be smaller but in my dream, I prefer to imagine a french team with 7 good players and 4 good coaches, rather than a WM with only individual players without coaching.

Paolo, do you think that if some player donīt have a "good" team, it will make his/ her playing individually easier or harder??

@ Kosti
"If you think and play as a team for the whole week you might find yourself quite high on a individual list after teamcompetition is finished."
That's exactly the problem. In my opinion it is not good that an individual event is affected by the result of the team event. There are some players who have a team playing for top rank, others who have a team without any chance and others who don't have a team at all. This creates different condition between players and that's not good for an individual event.

Without making any comment on this new playing system, I just canīt stop wondering these last comments here. Iīve been a member of a nationalteam that has not been playing for medals for ten years in a row now, but still had every year something "big" to play for. Sometimes our goal is to make the teamsuperfinal (like last year) and sometimes itīs something else. We have every year tight matches against Holland, Denmark, Czech Rebublick etc..

If you think and play as a team for the whole week you might find yourself quite high on a individual list after teamcompetition is finished. It might make your life bi easier. Thatīs how I think and I think it works, it might work for some other players too..

Right John,
as I said in the EMF article comments, it would be necessary that team competition results don't affect individual competitions in any way. This doesn't happen in any sport that has both individual and team events. Team events is always a completely different race (most famous examples are cross country skiing, ski jumping, swimming, athletics..)

In big international events, such as World Games or Olympics, it is _forbidden_ to count individual competition results also in team competition. If minigolf ever qualifies for World Games again, in that case 2 days team competition + 2 days individual competition would be really the only possible option. Unless you want to play a competition of 1 day only, starting from zero points.

I also like the team event and the team "spirit" you feel on that. But I still think that minigolf is mainly an individual sport (= a sport where the team is a sum of individual results...would you define swimming a "team sport" only because in the relay the 4 swimmers starts one after the other? Minigolf is very similiar...), so I think that actually the team event had too much space (3 of 4 competition days). 2 days don't cancel the team event, but give more space to individuals and I agree with John, there are so many countries that don't have (and won't have for still many years) the chance to have a good team. What I don't like of this formula is the double individual title (I've explained my reasons before).

Typically players from countries that have a chance in the team competition (ger, swe, sui, aut) think that "the team competition is most important for everyone". It doesn't feel so important for players of the 20 or 25 other countries, who spend a lifetime without ever having an realistic chance of winning a medal of any colour in team competition.

As for "the best player getting the medals", that principle was abandoned in 2007, now we are getting some of it back.
