Interview: Woman Player of the Year 2010: Rebecca Weber

Interview with Rebecca Weber (RW), Switzerland and MC Effretikon

This interview was done the 10th of Mars 2011. Interviewer is Hans Bergström (HB).

HB: First of all congratulations to a great season of 2010 which lead to the vote for “Woman player of the Year” on Minigolfnews. Did you expect to win the vote?

RW: First of all, thank you for the congratulations for the season of 2010. I wasn’t really expecting to win the vote, but after some days it looked pretty good and I’m very happy about being Woman player of the year! Thanks to everybody who has voted for me!

HB: You won both the public vote and the expert jury vote. Which of them do you value the most?

RW: Difficult question… and I do not even have an answer on it. It’s just a great honor to be vote from both “juries”.

HB: In Predazzo you won both individually and in the Team. Can you compare the two victories with each other? Which do you value most?

RW: The team title was one of my best experiences in my minigolf career. The team competition is the most important thing for me and it was an incredible time with my girls in Predazzo! (Thank you sooo much!)
The single title was for sure a big surprise for me and as well a great moment in my life. It was the culmination of the European Championships in Predazzo.

HB: Your final shot in Predazzo was a spectacular one. What happened?

RW: During the training and the competition I’ve had some problems on this lane. It wasn’t as easy for me as it seemed to be for the most of the other competitors. I was pretty nervous and my final shot wasn’t as good as it should have been. The ball touched the obstacle at the left side and found somehow its way into the hole. :) I was really lucky!

HB: How has your success been noticed by media and people around you?

RW: There have been published several newspaper articles. I’ve been honored by my club MC Effretikon. My boss has organized an event in the company I’m working. It has been published as well on the swiss minigolf page. Of course my friends and my family were very happy about my successful year and they were very proud. :)

HB: So how do you feel about the upcoming season? Will it be possible to find the motivation after a year of total success such as last year?

RW: Of course. I’m looking forward very much to the upcoming season. The national team championships have already started with a great success in Sirnach with my ladies of MC Effretikon. I’m looking forward to the WC in Stockholm too and hopefully as well to the EC in Vergiate.

HB: How does your season planning look like for 2011?

RW: So, I’ll participate in several national and international tournaments:
- National team competition
- National single competition in July
- WC in Stockholm in August
- Hopefully EC in Vergiate in September / October
Of Course I’ll participate as well in a lot of local tournaments during the season, as usual.

HB: There is currently an ongoing poll for “Men player of the Year”. Who will get the high points in this vote from you?

RW: That’s my little secret. The best shall win! :)

HB: WMF TC recently announced that the 2011 Championships will include both a stroke champion and a match play champion. What do you think about that decision?

RW: Honestly, I’m not happy about this decision at all. The team competition will be shorter and for me it is one of the most important reasons why I’m playing Minigolf internationally. On my opinion having two single champions in one year won’t be the same anymore. The medals are losing a bit of their value for me. It would be the best for our sport to go back to the original mode.

HB: Can you foresee any players making big breakthroughs in the international arena coming during 2011.

RW: Hm… I’ve really no idea. Probably young players I don’t know yet?

HB: What happens next for you in Minigolf?

RW: The next big event will be the second competition day of the national team championships in Grenchen (beginning of May).

HB: Again a big congratulation to the title “Women player of the year” and good luck in the future.

RW: Thank you very much. It’s was a pleasure to be interviewed! A big gratitude to all of the people who made these great successes possible!
Have a good time!

Just curious, exactly what do you mean with "It would be the best for our sport to go back to the original mode." ?

Matchplay or strokeplay? because for me, strokeplay is the original mode....even if I think this new mode is better than having only matchplay mode.
