On Saturday, the 27th and Sunday the 28th of May it was time not only to try out the renewed version of European Cup qualification but also to find out already which team has the best skills on felt and would take part in the European Cup in Algund. The qualification took place in internationally well know Lahti.
Manse RG from Tampere and MG-Aces from Pori got ready for the competition undoubtedly as two biggest favorites. First two rounds didn’t actually give any reliable clues about the upcoming winner: MG-Aces won the first round only by one shot and in turn Manse did better and won the next one by five shots. But that was end of playing side by side. With a 27 Aces-anchor Tero Vaahtio finished the best team round of whole weekend, total 187 shots, and raised his team to the leading position. While Aces-players kept on strengthening their lead in the fourth round was the difference between these two big favorites 11 shots for Aces in the end of the day. Teams SMGK and TaRGS from Helsinki couldn’t start the competition as lively as the top teams and the difference of shots increased almost too big to catch up.
Sunday was full of excitement! SMGK and TaRGS improved their playing but because of Saturday they didn’t have any other options than to be satisfied with the third and fourth place in order mentioned above. In the fight of leading position MG-Aces continued winning in the fifth round and raised its lead up to 26 shots. Manse-players still didn’t give up and in following two rounds they narrowed the difference with 11 shots! However, Manse’s final spurt started too late or ended too early. Last round wasn’t the best either for Manse or MG-Aces but MG-Aces’ and whole competition’s best player Kimmo Lehtiö finished his job with credit by playing 30 in the final round and guaranteed to his team a better team round than what Manse managed to score. So, with total 21 shots MG-Aces made its way to the victory and Italy and in August it will do its best to challenge the world’s toughest club teams!
