Fishing for a Win at the O-Street $1,000 Tournament

Avalon, NJ – In a weekend packed with miniature golf tournaments across the United States and the world, the mid-Atlantic region saw the 2nd O-Street $1,000 tournament taking place at Go Fish Golf, home of the previous O-Street Winter Classic in February. The weather was beautiful in the seaside town and 43 participants from across the Eastern United states played the 36 hole tournament. Among the participants and organizers were five players from Season 1 and 2 of the American TV show “Holey Moley”, so it was a star studded miniature golf affair.

The course itself was a classic American seaside course, with a nautical theme and obstacles throughout. There were very few holes where players would be relying on a pure putt alone for the shot and those were the holes that begged for the hole-in-one opportunities. Hole 12, “Boat Rise” was also going to be the biggest challenge the competitors faced as it was a difficult incline shot into a boat with a high chance of rolling back out of the tee box, which is a stroke penalty in this tournament.

With the previous O-Street tournament held on the same course, there was an idea of what might be winning score with 82 being the target from February. With that in mind, the top competitors tool aim at keeping a score under 40 and it started out that way for some familiar names in Northeast US minigolf. Pat Sheridan lead the group as the first player through the course with a 35, which was also a course record. He was followed closely by Mark Thornton (37), Justin Seymour, Rudy Reel and Joey DiPrima (38) and Bill Mezier III (39).

With the mark set, it was time for a grueling second round as the midday heat hit and the pace of play slowed. Seymour made the best run at the top spot, shooting a 39 in the final round and being the only player to keep it under 40 for both rounds. However, Sheridan would hold strong despite a 4 on the final hole and card 40, for a total of 75 and a two shot win over Seymour. Reel would hold onto third place after surviving a one-hole playoff with Anna Wallace who carded a 37 in the second round and would win the top spot in the women’s division. There was also playoff for the final paying spot (5th) between Evan Rundgren and Thornton. This playoff went two holes with Rundgren taking the win in the end.

This was Sheridan’s second win in two weekends and for his efforts he picked up $500 of the $1000 total purse. He would also win the aces trophy for carding 7 aces in the 2 rounds, again just squeaking past Seymour who carded 6 aces.

Sheridan had this to say about his win, “I had no real thoughts of winning going into the tournament. I came down to support my minigolf friends and just wanted to put in a good show against my friends mostly for bagging rights. I was surprised with how well my first round went. I’ve never set a course record in competitive play so even if I hadn’t won that was going to be a highlight of the day. Of course, I was pleased to hold onto the win. I want to thank Aaron Kaminski and O-Street for putting on the tournament. It’s great to have more events like this in our section of the country.”

Top 5 Overall

Pat Sheridan – 75
Justin Seymour – 77
Rudy Reel – 78 (playoff)
Anna Wallace – 78
Evan Rundgren – 79 (playoff)

Top 3 Women’s Division

Anna Wallace – 78
Mandy Ranslow – 83
Wendy Torroni – 84

Thank you to Aaron Kaminiski and O-Street Mini Golf for the pictures.
