April Day: New Professional World Tour to be launched in 2014

At the board meeting last weekend the WMF Board finally approved a new project to be launched for the season of 2014. Together with a new global sponsor (Adidas) and a big TV-network (Eurosport), WMF will launch a new professional tour with 5 tournaments in 3 continents.

100 players, first year 80 from Europe, 10 from Asia and 10 from America will be invited to participate in the new tour. The players will be selected mainly from the WMF ranking list but also wild-cards can be handed out after approval made by WMF TC in cooperation with the new sponsor.

Each player will have to pay a tournament player license fee of 1000 Euro for the first season but once the payment is done lots of advantages is included for the players. On each location there is free accommodation for five days and free meals for the players. There is no extra tournament fee once the license is paid and in all competitions 50% of the players will earn price money (in the same model as the cut in professional golf). The winning price for a tournament will be minimum 10.000 Euro and if you collect most price money in the five tournaments together you will get a special award as MPWT (Minigolf Professional World Tour) Master earning another 10.000 Euro and a new custom made white jacket.

Men and ladies will play together in one class and the first year 20 players will be ladies and 80 men.

The playing sites are almost done and there will likely be:

Felt in Uddevalla, Sweden (May)
Eternit in Yokohama, Japan (June)
Beton in Mainz, Germany (July)
MOS felt PPA-style in Chicago, USA (September)
Final on MOS beton, Sochi, Russia (October)

The new sponsor has agreed on a five year agreement as main sponsor of the new Tour and will invest 750.000 Euro per year on the tour. There is a clause in the agreement that WMF needs to find sponsors of another 250.000 Euro for the first year and also secure that at least 40 of the top 100 ranked male players and 10 of the top 30 ranked female players will participate.

To secure the interest of the Tour WMF will already today get information about interested players. You can find the link below to register your interest (not binding at the moment).

This sounds like a good idea. A small point regarding the tournament in the USA: If Chicago is the site, it will be MOS- not PPA style, as the Chicago area has no Putt-Putt courses that are tournament caliber.

To give you more detailed information from a friend of mine who is working at Red Bull headquarters in Fuschl(Austria): The conflict between Vettel and Webber led to an enormous loss of image for the brand. Red Bull will retire in 2015 from F1 . They are searching for a sport with friendly image and no injuries. Minigolf is on top of the list!
