Visa trouble stopped Swedish Juniors from playing in Sochi

Sweden 20 May 2010 at 23:57 | Published by: Hans | Views: 9396 | News search

Visa trouble stopped Swedish Juniors from playing in Sochi The Swedish Junior Team that was on its way to play the Nations Cup in Sochi received an unpleasant surprise when trying to board the plane from Vienna to Sochi. They were left not being able to board the same plane as the German and Austrian squads due to incomplete Visas for Russia.

The Swedish Head of the Juniors Team Erik Gustavsson was not able to join the team in person and tells Minigolfnews that he don’t know exactly why this was happening and he just feels it’s a shame for the Team not being able to compete.

The team that was on its way to Sochi was Frida Elmdahl, Filip Johansson, Oskar Kjellberg and Eirik Seljelid.

Erik,

Why do you expect more problems in August? What other disadvantages do countries like Russia have in this context? All other registered teams had their visas organized. Where exactly the problem is with Sweden, I can't tell. The fact is that they did not have a valid visas. The rest is an SBGF internal issue. It is a very European way of thinking that the competitions can not take place in a country like Russia. Think about the fact that the Russians do organize their trips to us since ten years - they need the visa every year and the process for sure is not easier that way round.

The team returned home yesterday. The next Austrian Airlines flight to Sochi (no other direct flights from Vienna to Sochi, option probably via Moscow) would have been in two days time. It might have been possible to get visas by then, but waiting two days in Vienna and then being here for a half day's practice and competition is not really fascinating. So I can understand the decision to return home. My best regards also via this medium to Frida, Fille, Oskar, Eirik and Bjarne, we are missing you down here.

As I understand it the team had to spend a night at the airport in Vienna and then returned to Sweden yesterday. So they where never allowed to border the plane to Sochi.

@JJM read: '...stopped Swedish juniors from playing...' so they obviously are not playing in Russia.
This is just one of the disadvantages of having a big championship in a country like Russia. Too bad for the players and the organisation. I expect more problems for the coming championships in august.

So did the team return back home, or did they try to get a quick (and more expensive) express visa and travel with a later flight? Lots of money burnt in any case.
