Hansson and Piekorz the new youth world champions

Today was the final day of the individual stroke play at the YWC in Lahti, Finland.

In the girls class it was Sweden’s Jasmin Hansson in the lead by three strokes this morning before Austria’s Lara Jehle. Another three strokes behind was Germanys Annika Dellmann. It was most likely these three that would end up on the medal podium and when the closest chaser behind Annika, Natasja Huber of Switzerland had a terrible day (in the end actually falling from fourth to ninth position) it was nothing that would stop these three girls from taking the medals.

Maybe the question most was wondering was if the young 16 years old Jasmin would stand the test from her older and lots more experienced competitors Lara and Annika.

But Jasmin showed very little nerves and actually extended her lead with the morning’s double round to be 8 in front of Lara and 9 in front of Annika with two laps to go. But on the last double round Jasmin got into trouble on the tough lane number nine on eternit (Salzburgber V). A five there and she gave Annika some hope now only 4 strokes behind with 27 lanes to go. But after this Jasmin didn’t not gave any more hopes for Annika and the lead was between 3 and 5 strokes all the way to end finally in four after a last two on lane 18 for Jasmin (with final result 328).

Gold for Jasmin and just like two years ago silver for Annika. Lara was seventh two years ago but now gaining bronze.

In the boys class it was it was Germanys Sebastian Piekorz and Christian Zielaff in the lead this morning with Alexander Dahlstedt of Sweden two strokes behind. But early on a firm grip was taken by four Germans. Alexander was passed by both Marcel Waleska and Manuel Szablikowski and with two laps to go it looked very much like a German triple just as it was in Bad Munder. That time Sebastian Piekorz was on bronze position but this time he wanted more. With two laps to go it was the German debut player Christian Zielaff in top, but unfortunately the Salzburger V destroyed Christians hopes on lap 11 (he got 6 strokes). And by that it was Sebastian, Marcel and Manuel fighting for the title. Alexander Dahlstedt was never far behind but too many mistakes on the last felt round (31 including two fours and one three) made it impossible to come really close to the stable triple from Germany.

In the end the gold was maybe decided on lane 12 (angle) where an ace for Sebastian made his lead 3 strokes with 6 lanes to go. Even if he lost two against Manuel on the ending it was still gold for Sebastian this time, with a final result of 315, one stroke ahead of Manuel and three ahead of Marcel. In fourth position we find Alexander on 321. Fifth was the leader with two laps to go Christian on 325 and sixth was upcoming Russian star Igor Pantelimonov on 327.

It can also be noted that this tournament can be seen as a major breakthrough for the Russians. Even if they have won medals before this time many player performed really well. 3 of 4 girls are in the match play with stroke play fifth Yulia Korytina as best player and four of the boys is also in match play finals tomorrow.

Tomorrow the match play finals are played with the below draw.
