Oxford’s Michael Smith wins the BMGA National Open minigolf tournament in Liverpool, it was his third minigolf win of the season.
Michael Smith won the BMGA National Open minigolf tournament with a 54-hole score of 92 (-16) at the British Minigolf Association’s National Open competition held on Sunday 20th March, at the Jungle Rumble Indoor Adventure Golf course at the Liverpool ONE shopping centre.
19 British Minigolf Association (BMGA) Tour players took part in the event.
The tournament was played over three 18-hole rounds at the Jungle Rumble venue’s Swamp and Volcano courses, and was won by Oxford’s Michael Smith, a member of the Kent Minigolf Club, with a score of 92 (-16). Cambridge’s Adam Kelly was runner-up, one-shot back on 93, with Lewisham’s Nick Sandqvist third on 96.
This season Michael Smith has won the first three individual BMGA Tour events, collecting wins at the BMGA Star City Open in Birmingham in January, the BMGA Rumble in the Jungle in Bristol in February, and now the BMGA National Open in Liverpool.
New BMGA National Open Champion Michael Smith said "I'm delighted to have won the National Open in Liverpool. I played really well across the three rounds. It was a fantastic battle between Adam and me and I'm very thankful I was able to ace the final two holes to secure the victory."
Other prize winners at the competition were Chris Smith, who won the Category 2 prize. The Kent Minigolf Club’s Marion Homer defeated the Green Minigolf Club’s Seth Thomas in a sudden-death play-off for the Category 2 runner-up spot.
Hither Green’s James Rutherford won the Aces prize with 17 holes-in-one across the three-rounds
New course records were set at the Jungle Rumble venue, with Michael Smith and Adam Kelly sharing the course record of 29 (-7) on the Swamp course, and Nick Sandqvist recording a 29 (-7) on the Volcano course.
