Italian Federation Celebrates Peace and Sport

Since 2014, April 6th has been the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. (IDSDP). This is commemorated each year by international sport organizations to honor the role that sport plays in society. In 2021, the Peace and Sport organization wanted to highlight “the testimonies of real people who have personally or collectively measured the positive impact of a peace-through-sport project”. This was done with an online campaign, urging people to share their stories through the April6.org platform and through using the #Whitecard hashtag on social media.
This year the Federazione Italian Minigolf (FIMg) shared some of their stories and had two that were featured on the April6.org site. You can check out the two stories highlighting the accessibility of the sport to those with disabilities and the diversity and acceptance of the sport. We caught up with Dr. Marco Tomasini, President of FIMg to discuss their decision to join in the campaign and what impact it can have for the sport at large.
“We decided to join the #whitecard campaign as we strongly believe in the gender equality and social inclusion,” said Dr. Tomasini. “We feel that minigolf can be a driver to deliver sustainability in terms of social value. Our federation strongly support social inclusion in the disciplines and strive to the increasing of the inclusion.
We do believe that minigolf is the perfect sport of the future. No barriers between gender. People can compete without any barriers. Gender equality is the future of our sports. Minigolf [allows] people with disability to compete on the same fields with the same condition of the other athletes. We do believe that WMF should start a great cooperation with Peace and Sport, and we do believe that our national federation can be the leader of the cooperation project between Peace and Sport and WMF.”
The campaign continues to be ongoing so individuals can contribute their personal stories of the impact minigolf has on the world.
