Difficult lanes in Odense

Difficult lanes in Odense
Training before start on Friday morning  (Photo by Hans Bergström 2009)

As seen on the results from Odense both the courses where difficult. But exactly how difficult where those courses. By using the PAR calculations in the Swedish HCP-online system we can now compare these courses with other known courses in the past years.

Felt course:

Odense 2009 : PAR = 30,9
Bad Munder 2003 : PAR = 29,2
Budapest 2007 : PAR = 28,0
Södertälje 2008 : PAR = 28,3

Eternit:

Odense 2009 : PAR = 22,9
Waldshut 2009 : PAR = 20,0
Lamego 2009 : PAR = 21,4
Bad Munder 2003 : PAR = 21,4
Timisoara 2004 : PAR = 22,8
Steyer 2005 : PAR = 21,2
Geldrop 2006 : PAR = 21,5
Canegrate 2007 : PAR = 23,6
Tampere 2008 : PAR = 20,2

So based on this the felt course are the toughest played in recent years and the eternit is the second toughest played. The high PAR for Canegrate is partly due to high results at the nations Cup in 2007. Only based on the WC in 2007 the PAR would be 22,7.

Worth noticing is that these PAR is calulated only based on players playing for Swedish clubs.

According to the USGA 'Slope" is a ratio that represents how difficult a course will play for golfers of varying abilities in relation to a scratch golfer. Slope takes into account certain aspects of a golf course's layout that will affect a high-handicapper's score more than a low-handicapper's.

... the high PAR of Swedish Team at Timisoara 2004 is because it was a very particular and difficult T500, not eternit.

I agree that we have a "slope" factor also in Minigolf. It has been discussed under the term of "SVAJ" in the Swedish Federation but is not implemented in HCP-online at the moment.

The classification of golf courses includes two parts, "par" and "slope":

- "Par" tells what score an HCP +0 player will typically get on the course.
- "Slope" tells what score an HCP +18 player will typically get on the course.

Two courses with the same "par" (equal difficulty for HCP +0 players) can have very different "slopes" (different difficulty for players with higher HCP). For example, a typical adventure golf course can have the same "par" as a typical felt course, but a much smaller "slope", because felt courses give high scores to less talented players, but adventure golf courses don't give very high scores to anyone.

The point is: "par" is useful information for comparing the scores of top-class players. But "par" is sometimes NOT very useful information for comparing the scores of other players than the very best.
